Origin and evolution of Sustainable Leadership concept

Abstract. Introduction. In today’s world, business entities operate in an extremely dynamic environment, which significantly complicates the choice of a management strategy that can ensure the long-term success of the organization. The scientific concepts of “sustainable development” and “sustainable leadership” offer qualitatively new approaches aimed at achieving the development of enterprises in the economic, social and environmental spheres. While these concepts have been widely implemented at the level of global and national economies, the issue of their application in the business environment remains controversial, creating prospects for active research of this issue.

Purpose. The article examines the origin of the concept of “sustainable leadership” based on the analysis of Ukrainian and foreign research in terms of the origin and development of the concepts of “sustainable development”, “sustainable leadership”, “sustainability leadership” and “leadership for sustainability”.

Results. The comparative analysis of the authors’ scientific works, which had a decisive influence on the development of the concept of “sustainable leadership” and its adaptation to the business environment, is carried out. The study is focused on the identification of common and distinctive features in the approaches of scholars to the interpretation of the phenomenon. On the basis of the obtained results the author’s own interpretation of the concept of “sustainable leadership” is proposed and a model of “sustainable leadership” is developed. The proposed model takes into account the main focuses of the interpretation of “sustainable leadership” in international practice, in particular, stakeholder requirements, sustainable leadership practices and sustainable leadership results. The theoretical background focuses primarily on social and environmental development practices, while the proposed model is complemented by economic and financial development practices and financial results, which indicates that it is impossible to achieve long-term sustainable development without maintaining a balance between the three main elements of the concept.

Conclusions. The results obtained will be useful both for scholars in the development of scientific debates on the conceptualization of sustainable development and for practitioners aimed at improving management approaches to the implementation of sustainable business development.
