Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Development of Ukrainian Agricultural Enterprises under Prolonged War

Abstract. Introduction. Since 2022, prolonged military hostilities in Ukraine have significantly transformed the operating environment of agricultural enterprises, intensifying financial, infrastructural, social, and environmental risks. Under martial law, the agricultural sector faces the challenge of maintaining production continuity while simultaneously ensuring long-term sustainability. In this context, innovations have become not only a strategic development factor but also a key mechanism for adaptation and resilience under conditions of heightened uncertainty.

Purpose. The purpose of this article is to investigate the role of innovations in ensuring the sustainable development of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine under martial law and to substantiate strategic orientations for innovative transformation of agrarian business in the context of prolonged warfare.

Results. The article analyses contemporary scientific approaches to the interpretation of innovations and sustainable development of agricultural enterprises and summarises the impact of martial law on innovation activity in the agrarian sector. The methodological framework is based on systemic and integrated approaches, methods of analysis and generalisation. To assess internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats shaped by wartime conditions, a SWOT analysis was applied. On this basis, a TOWS matrix was developed to identify strategic orientations of innovative development aligned with economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainable development. The results indicate that agricultural enterprises possess significant adaptive potential due to accelerated digitalisation, resource efficiency, and cooperation practices, while facing persistent constraints related to limited financial resources, infrastructural vulnerability, and human capital losses.

Conclusions. It is concluded that under martial law innovations perform a dual function: they ensure short-term adaptation of agricultural enterprises to crisis conditions and form the foundation for sustainable development in the long term. The practical value of the research lies in the applicability of the SWOT–TOWS approach for substantiating strategic decisions on innovative development of agricultural enterprises during wartime and in the context of post-war recovery.
