E-commerce Development Trends: Statistics and Key Facts
Abstract. Introduction. In recent years, e-commerce has become an integral part of global commerce. Like many other industries, the buying and selling of goods has undergone significant changes since the advent of the Internet, and with the digitization of modern life currently underway, consumers around the world are now reaping the benefits of online transactions. As global Internet access and penetration rapidly increase, the number of people making purchases through e-commerce continues to grow.
Purpose. The main objective of the study was to provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of e-commerce in the global marketplace. The emergence and development of the latest technologies, the growth of the audience of Internet users, and the emergence of fierce competition are leading to the creation of innovations and new approaches to online trading, payment, and social commerce.
Results It was found that the rating of the largest e-commerce markets in the world is led by Asia. The leader in the world ranking of online retail stores in terms of traffic is Amazon, whose market capitalization is about 1.34 trillion US dollars. The largest online traffic market in Latin America is Mercado Libre, with more than 440 million visits per month. Alibaba is the world’s leading company by share of gross merchandise volume (GMV) on the network. The online conversion rate of e-commerce sites was highest in the food and beverage sector at 3.7% in 2023. It is noted that the development of e-commerce led to a change in payment methods with sellers, as a result of which digital and mobile wallets gained popularity. It was noted that one of the most popular innovations in the field of e-commerce is the integration of personalized recommendations for products and services, the role of artificial intelligence in expanding the capabilities of sellers is substantiated. In the process of e-commerce research, it was determined that many factors influence the activity of online platforms. The results are significantly influenced not only by the actions of online trading companies. They are also influenced by the needs of consumers – Generation Z, which reacts to innovations in a completely different way and has an innate ability to adapt and use social networks and most trading platforms. Some economic sectors that have branches in online commerce are not very developed, which will significantly affect their activities due to the digitalization of all activities and the need to adapt.
Conclusions. It should be noted that e-commerce is a new branch of trade, which in the twenty-first century had an active development and has new opportunities to improve the existing system of online trade and interaction between suppliers of goods and services and their consumers. The article analyzes statistical facts about e-commerce markets, which in the near future should not only compete, but also unite for joint activities and eliminate the negative effects of global disasters and crises.
