Organic Production in Western Polissya: Export Potential of the Segment
Abstract. Introduction. The regional advantages of organic production are shaped by favourable natural and climatic conditions, which enable the cultivation of rare or higher-quality organic produce. Investment support for such production depends largely on regional and local resources and investment conditions. Scholarly sources highlight several key opportunities for developing the organic market in Ukraine, such as expanding export potential, helping operators to find alternative logistics routes, strengthening partnerships and aligning the regulatory framework. The authors also focus on the issue of export potential, particularly in relation to the development of infrastructure for international logistics. In Ukraine, organic farms are concentrated in several regions, and the export orientation of producers, especially those in the legume and berry segments, remains dominant and has intensified in the context of the war.
Purpose. The purpose of this publication is to review the export potential of such a segment as the production of organic products in Western Polissya.
Results. This article examines the current state of, and main trends in, organic production development in the Rivne region, based on data from certification bodies and an analysis of the practical experience of leading enterprises. A growing number of producers are active in the region’s organic sector, and powerful clusters with organically certified areas and export-oriented production have formed among them. These enterprises’ activities include cultivating organic crops, developing processing capacities, and accessing foreign markets, primarily in the European Union.
The achievements and challenges of organic agribusiness are outlined using the example of enterprises such as “Deddens Agro”, “Ritter Bio Agro” and “Kunivske”. These include the implementation of innovative projects for the cultivation and processing of organic sugar beet, the development of organic berry cultivation, the use of biotechnological approaches to soil fertility management, and the adoption of sustainable agricultural technologies. Despite their dependence on the world market situation and periodic changes in crop structure, the high investment attractiveness of enterprises is confirmed by examples of successful projects in the field of organic livestock and dairy production.
Educational, scientific and public initiatives are an important component of the development of the organic sector in the region. The project ‘Development of organic berry growing in territorial communities of the Rivne region’ demonstrates the effective collaboration between local authorities, farmers, educational institutions and international partners in establishing export-oriented value chains. As part of the project, farmers received training, demonstration plots were established, organic raspberry plantations were certified, and infrastructure for the rapid freezing of products was set up.
Conclusions. This publication’s review of the export potential of the organic product production segment in Western Polissya revealed the following about the segment’s operators: they have experience of working with the EU and have established stable ties with market leaders in organic production. They are on par with world producers and are in line with global market trends. They also cooperate with leading scientific institutions and have modern laboratories and technologies, particularly for soil expertise. They also receive state attention and support, particularly at the Institute of Agriculture of Western Polissya NAAS.
Further research prospects include an in-depth study of the investment attractiveness of this foreign economic activity segment.
